Characterizations of Viola and Duke!

She’s the Man

She’s the Man (2006) is an American romantic comedy film. The film is directed by Andy Fickman, based on Twelfth Night, a play by William Shakespare who lived in the 15th century.

Viola (Amanda Bynes):
Viola is a teenage girl, she is in high school and plays soccer at Cornwall, the team of her school. One day the girls’ team got cut and Viola and the others girls on the team wants to play on the boys’ team, but they got refused by the boys’ coach. Viola has a boyfriend at the boys’ team and he was being an idiot, so she dumped him. Then Viola got an idea. She wants to play for Cornwall’s rival, Illyria! Her dream is to beat the Cornwall boys’ team and humiliate her stupid ex boyfriend, Justin.

Viola has a twin brother, Sebastian. Sebastian is supposed to enter Illyria boarding school as a new student, but instead he is going to London to play his music. Viola covers Sebastian and decided to pretend to be her brother. With a little bit help Viola quickly becomes Sebastian! In the movie we see how Viola is trying to be a part of the Illyria boys’ team. At the boarding school Viola/Sebastian gets in the middle of a series of love affairs. For example she falls in love with her roommate, the handsome Duke.

Viola is a pretty girl. She has a natural look and long brown hair. She has a very boyish look and she hates make up and nice dresses. Viola has a lot of friends and she loves soccer, which is the only thing she wants to do! Viola is a very sensitive and romantic girl; this is almost the only thing she can’t hide when she pretends to be Sebastian.

All the time when Viola pretends to be Sebastian she tries to talk boyish. But she only sounds weird. She says things like “yo bro” and other creepy things all the time.

Duke (Channing Tatum):
Duke is a teenage boy, he is also in high school and plays for the Illyria boys’ team at school. Viola/ Sebastian become Duke’s roommate. Duke sees that Sebastian is a bit different than other boys, but he also likes he’s new roommate. The two of them connects and gets a really good chemistry.
Duke is a good looking guy! He’s tall, wide shouldered and has a great body. A typically dream boy! Compared to other guys, Duke is very sensitive. He likes to talk about all kinds of stuff and he is a really good friend. Duke is also a great soccer player and got a lot of friends.

Duke thinks he’s in love with the schools prettiest girl, Olivia. He is only in love with the thought of her actually.  It turns out that Duke and Olivia have no chemistry at all, and that Olivia in fact is in love with Viola/Sebastian.

Viola and Duke
Similarities between Viola and her roommate Duke are that both of them loves soccer, they have a lot of friends and they are very sensitive! I think the only difference between the two, is that Duke is a boy and Viola is a girl.

Duke and Viola both gets more open and sensitive with each other in the end of the movie.
One day Duke is going to a Tivoli, so is Viola. She had put on a nice red dress and let her hair down. They finally met in the kissing booth and had an intense kiss.  In the end of the movie, everyone finds out that Viola really is a girl during the big soccer match. After this the connection between Viola and Duke develop to something more than just and friendship.

Message of the film
I believe the message of the film is that you can do anything you want regardless of your gender.  We don’t want gender discrimination at all! You can still succeed in soccer if you are a girl and you can of course be a great dancer if you are a boy.

I think this play is very interesting and relevant because everyone should be able to live out their dream despite their gender. I love this movie; it’s funny, romantic and meaningful all at the same time. J A great film!
